How to make every day awesome!

Reaching Out to the Sun

Whilst we all need things to look forward to – holidays, weddings, weekends away, nights out, there is no reason we can’t also make the mundane magical.

In a rare free weekend, I started to jot down things to look forward to and was thinking especially of a long distance coastal path I am walking soon.

I thought ‘wow, ten days of awesomeness’ and then I thought, why can’t today be as awesome, even a mundane Sunday? So I started to think, what is it that makes us feel this way about special events which we may not feel day to day.

Here are 4 ways to tap in to that ‘special event’ feeling:

1. Allow yourself to feel awesome.

Florence Scovel Shinn, the 1920s metaphysical writer used an affirmation: “I am ready for the happy surprises coming my way”. This starts your day with hopeful expectancy. I said this mantra whilst applying a face mask and added “and this is one of them”. Yes, it was a simple activity, but it wasn’t something I had planned and thus was a happy surprise. Enjoying the little things in life prepares you to enjoy the bigger things.

2. Be Calm.

Another inspiring mantra for me by Florence Scovel Shinn is “my ships come to me over a calm sea”. What can you do today to make you feel calm? For me this is meditation, being still, sitting with intention. But on some days for me, this means taking a walk, going for a run to burn off the excess energy. It also promotes a sense of expectation and peacefulness, rather than grasping at things with impatience.

3. Eat in a way that makes you feel good.

Ideally, this would be something healthy, nutritious and fulfilling, but it may be something that is indulgent and a treat and makes you feel good. Yesterday, I indulged in some hot, sticky toffee pudding – actually, I allowed myself two, justified by the fact I ran a marathon the week before! I celebrated this achievement in my own way. We do not always need to be our own slave driver. We can give ourselves time and space to enjoy the achievements we have pushed for, by doing the total opposite!

4. Switch to an attitude of gratitude.

I witness people suffering around me, based on their notions of expectation. “I should be given this”, “I deserve that”, “I have worked here this long, I should be getting x,y,z”. This hinders the flow of positive energy. Changing this perception to one of gratitude, “I am so grateful to have this job”, “ I am so lucky to have these friends / this house” helps keep motivation, focus and stops taking things for granted. This allows abundance to manifest. Simple expressions such as “I am so lucky to be able to turn on a tap and have fresh water” can make the simple things in life become amazing gifts!
